Celebrating the Official Opening of 178 and 184 Middle Street

On Thursday evening, project partners, local officials, team members, community collaborators, and nearby tenants were welcomed into 178 Middle Street and 184 Middle Street to celebrate the official opening of the two newly renovated, conjoining buildings, marking the completion of The Docent’s Collection’s latest hospitality expansion.

Situated within Old Port Square, these two architecturally significant 19^th-century buildings underwent extensive historic rehabilitation to become what they are today. Known as the Boyd Block and the William Widgery Thomas Block, the buildings now boast modern, design-forward private lofts on their upper floors and upgraded, prime retail space on the ground level.

“These two buildings reflect the spirit and character of Portland’s historic Old Port,” said Tim Soley, President and CEO of East Brown Cow. “Maintaining their unique identity, while ushering them into a new era, was pivotal throughout every stage of this process. We could not have achieved these historic renovations without the expertise of our project team, many of whom are here today. Thank you to our partners and community members for helping preserve and uplift the urban fabric and architectural history of Portland’s Old Port.”

The Boyd Block, completed this summer and located at 178 Middle Street, features 16 new lofts for East Brown Cow’s hospitality offering, The Docent’s Collection. Available in one- and two-bedroom layouts, the lofts feature large windows, historic details, custom floor-to-ceiling paneled kitchens, Maine-based art, and local amenities. The building was originally completed in 1867 and designed by Architect George M. Harding in an ornate, Italianate style, which inspired the final interior design of the lofts. The ground floor of the building has also been renovated and is home to local, boutique handbag designer, Rough & Tumble.

The William Widgery Thomas Block, which completed construction late this fall, is located at 184 Middle Street and features three new one- and two-bedroom lofts. The building was originally completed in 1867 and is similar to the Boyd Block in its final style and interior design. The ground floor of the building is home to the national eyewear brand Warby Parker.
